I force quit safari and restarted, but since then mac running hot and security certificate pop up for ib., which having googled is adware, on sites that were previously fine. Tried to shut it down, but every time I clicked on the x, my printer box popped up. Had virus alert page pop up earlier today on safari, whilst browsing. I don't know if you can decipher from it if I have an issue, or is it a safari/mavericks problem? In the absence of any malware removal tools and without being able to find anything manually, I ran etrecheck on my system to see if that showed any possible adware/malware.
I'm running Mavericks 10.9.5 and Safari 9.1.3 (can't upgrade as old software will no longer work).
Incidentally, since this all happened, my mac seems to be running very hot. I tested Firefox by loading the amazon website and I notice that there's no popup window there. I am loathe to download adware removal software as this may make things worse, but am worried that I may have inadvertently caused malware on my machine.
I have followed the manual steps suggested to remove it, reset safari, deleted cache and looked for 'search' in various library folders (I didn't find anything), but to no avail. I click cancel, but I googled the issue and it tells me it's adware. I suddenly noticed that when I go on certain sites (amazon being one), I get up pop up window telling me 'safari can't verify the identity of the website 'ib.''. I force quit Safari and restarted it and all seemed OK. When I tried to shut the page down, my printer window kept coming up. I was browsing in Safari earlier and an adware page popped up telling me I had a virus and to call a number to remove it.
